Both aged 20, the rapid bowler Pathirana and versatile all-rounder Wellalage are unfazed by the prospect of competing against their childhood idols in the upcoming tournament, set to commence on October 5.

Sri Lanka, still reeling from their recent loss to India in the Asia Cup final, where they were bundled out for a mere 50 runs, are eager to turn their fortunes around on the global stage. However, Wellalage remains optimistic that the rigorous preparations they have undertaken will stand them in good stead at the World Cup.

During the Asia Cup clash with India in Colombo on September 12, Wellalage delivered a standout performance in one-day internationals, securing figures of 5 for 40, despite India ultimately emerging victorious by a margin of 41 runs.

Yet, Pathirana admits that he is still honing his distinctive bowling action and occasionally struggles with wides. However, he receives encouragement from his coaches, who believe that his unique action will only improve with time and experience.

Pathirana's meteoric rise in the cricketing world saw him transition quickly from playing for the Under-19s in the 2020 and 2022 World Cups to being fast-tracked by Sri Lanka Cricket. Reflecting on his journey, he stated, "I had the opportunity to participate in the Abu Dhabi T10, followed by the IPL, and it was the IPL experience that propelled me into the Sri Lanka national team."

Sri Lanka's head coach, Chris Silverwood, has high praise for Pathirana, describing him as a dedicated and promising player with a "bright future."

Wellalage, too, has garnered commendation from cricketing circles. Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Dinesh Karthik remarked, "He is a budding star capable of delivering exceptional performances."
