Former Manchester City Manager Brian Horton Urges Early Cancer Testing After Personal Diagnosis

In a compelling turn of events, former Manchester City boss Brian Horton has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, prompting him to emphasize the significance of early cancer testing. At 74 years old, Horton's unexpected diagnosis came as a surprise, but his decision to get tested early has made a significant difference.

The former Port Vale, Brighton, Luton, and Hull winger, who also managed Manchester City during his career, was fortunate to detect the cancer in its early stages. This revelation came about through a chance conversation with Wrexham assistant Steve Parkin, who had undergone a private medical examination arranged by the League Managers Association (LMA).

Horton reminisces, "About six months ago, he asked me if I had been for one myself, and I said I hadn't, so I booked it in."

The Big C: A Difficult Revelation

Horton's career began with non-league Hednesford Town and eventually led him to play for Vale, Brighton, Luton, and Hull, where he transitioned into management during the mid-1980s. He later managed Oxford, Manchester City, Huddersfield, and returned to Brighton and Port Vale, concluding his managerial journey with Macclesfield Town.

Facing his diagnosis earlier this year, Horton contemplated whether to share the news with his family. He explains, "I didn't know what to do. It's that word, the big C. My daughter Lucy was just about to have her second little boy, and I didn't tell her until she had him because I didn't want to put more pressure on her."

Advocating for Early Testing

Horton reconsidered his decision to keep his diagnosis private after attending the Premier League match between Luton and Brighton in August. Luton legend Mick Harford, who had also received prostate cancer treatment, encouraged Horton to share his story, hoping it would inspire others to undergo testing.

Horton recalls, "Mick was at the game and asked whether I was going to go public with it. I said I didn't know what to do, I don't know whether to keep it quiet. He said to me, 'I think you're totally wrong. You've got to put it out. There are people who hold you in such high esteem - Brighton, Luton, Man City, Port Vale fans - if you put it out, it could lead to people being tested, and if they've got it, it's caught early.'"

Message of Hope and Early Detection

Since receiving his diagnosis, Horton has commenced treatment, and to his relief, he experienced no symptoms before the diagnosis. He is now in good spirits and spreading awareness to those who might not typically consider testing.

"It's just about getting the word out to get tested, no matter how old you are. I'm saying to my younger ones they should get tested. If anyone wants to lean on me and find out more about it, then I'm willing to do whatever I can. The message is basically to go and get tested," Horton urges.

By sharing his personal journey, Brian Horton hopes to inspire others to prioritize their health and undergo early testing for cancer, ensuring a brighter and healthier future for all.
