Overcoming Challenges: Max Bird's Candid Discussion About His Injury Journey at Derby County, Including a Surprisingly Early Comeback

Derby County midfielder Max Bird expressed his delight at returning to the pitch after a six-and-a-half-week injury layoff. The 23-year-old had been sidelined with an ankle injury but made a surprising appearance in the starting lineup against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, where Derby emerged victorious with a 3-1 scoreline. Bird played for 70 minutes before being substituted for Conor Hourihane.

Bird's return to action was a source of joy for the Derby midfielder, who had worked diligently to recover ahead of schedule. Speaking to RamsTV, he said, "I loved it. It's been a long time coming, but I got my head down, worked hard in rehabilitation, and returned a couple of weeks earlier than expected. I'm just thrilled to be back out there with the boys. It was a significant win for us, and hopefully, we can build on that."

While Bird's inclusion in the starting lineup may have been somewhat unexpected after his extended absence, he emphasized his readiness to play whenever called upon. "It wasn't a surprise to start, but if you're out for six and a half weeks, it probably wasn't expected, if you get me? I'm ready to play whenever, and when the gaffer asked me how long I could play, I said 90 minutes, obviously. It's good to be back out there, and I'm ready now when called upon."

Bird's return to action came earlier than initially projected, but he had prepared himself well during his recovery. He explained, "I was told between six and eight weeks, which I think was an estimate to keep me motivated from when the injury occurred. It came at a challenging time early in the season when I was feeling good and moving well. The gaffer gave me a week off to clear my head, but then I came back and committed myself to rehabilitation work. I'm still working on certain aspects to strengthen my ankle to its full potential."

Reflecting on the severity of his injury, Bird had a conversation with the doctor, who highlighted the potential for a worse outcome. "I had a conversation with the doctor when it happened, and he told me it was a serious injury, but it could have been much worse. They thought I might have cracked my leg due to the pain I was in, but he said that if I hadn't done all the pre-season work and put in the effort, my ankle might have been in a worse condition and less recoverable. I focused on the positives and viewed it from a different perspective."
