How Liverpool loanee Calvin Ramsay is shining at Preston and following Gerrard’s footsteps

Calvin Ramsay is one of the most promising young talents in British football. The 20-year-old right-back joined Preston North End on loan from Liverpool for the 2023-24 season, after making only two appearances for the Reds in the previous campaign. Ramsay is eager to prove himself at Deepdale and help the Lilywhites climb the Championship table.

Ramsay began his career at Aberdeen, where he made his debut in March 2021 and quickly established himself as a regular starter. He won the SFWA Young Player of the Year award for 2021-22, his only full season with the Dons, and attracted the attention of several Premier League clubs. Liverpool secured his signature in June 2022 for an initial fee of £4.2m, a club record sale for Aberdeen1.

However, Ramsay faced stiff competition for a place in Liverpool’s defence, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Neco Williams and Joe Gomez ahead of him in the pecking order. He made his debut for the club in November 2022, coming on as a late substitute in a Champions League win over Napoli2, and started his first game in a EFL Cup victory over Derby County later that month3. In February 2023, he suffered an injury that ruled him out for the rest of the season4.

Ramsay recovered from his setback and joined Preston on loan in June 2023, hoping to gain more first-team experience and develop his game under manager Ryan Lowe. He made his debut for the club in a 1-0 win over Reading on the opening day of the season, and has since impressed with his attacking flair, defensive solidity and versatility. He can also play as a right midfielder or a wing-back, and has been deployed in different formations by Lowe.

Ramsay has also made his mark on the international stage, earning his first cap for Scotland in a friendly defeat to Turkey in November 2022. He has since become a regular member of Steve Clarke’s squad, and was part of the team that reached the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship, where they lost to eventual champions France.

Ramsay has cited Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard as his main inspiration, and has also praised his current and former managers for their guidance and support. He said: “I’ve always looked up to Gerrard, he was my idol growing up. He was a leader, a winner and a great player. I try to learn from him and emulate his style. He’s also been very helpful and encouraging to me since I joined Liverpool. He’s always giving me advice and tips on how to improve. He’s a legend of the game and I’m lucky to have him as a mentor.”

He added: “I’m also very grateful to Lowe and Derek McInnes, who gave me my chance at Aberdeen. They are both fantastic managers who have helped me a lot in my career. They have shown faith in me and given me opportunities to play and express myself. They have also taught me a lot about the tactical and mental aspects of the game. I owe them a lot and I hope to repay them with my performances.”

Ramsay is confident that he can make an impact at Preston and help the club achieve its ambitions. He said: “I’m really enjoying my time at Preston. It’s a great club with a great history and a great fanbase. The players and staff have been very welcoming and supportive. We have a good squad with a lot of quality and potential. We want to challenge for the promotion places and play attractive football. I’m here to do my best and help the team in any way I can. I’m ready to excite the fans and show them what I can do.”
